Mr Sham Maharaj

Mr Sham Maharaj has been involved with community organisations since the township started in 1978. He is a founder member of the Phoenix working commitee and the Phoenix Child & Family Welfare Society. He has been responsible for the building of Phoenix Sports center, Phoenix Youth Center and Phoenix Welfare center. Mr Maharaj is currently the senior manager : Events & Protocol for the eThekwini municipality .

C.C JINABHAI (PROF)

Professor Jinabhau ( Noddy) played a crucial role in development of community organisations in the Phoenix area. He together with others participated in the formation of the Phoenix Working Committee and the Phoenix Child Welfare in the late 1970`s and early 1980`s. Professor todays serves as a research fellow at the Nelson R. Mandela Hospital .

 

 

Thembinkosi Lenford

 

 

MdibiLenford is a community activist who  has  lived and worked extensively in the Bambayi area of Inanda from the late 1970’s . Lenford was a key activist in the civic movement that mobilised the local community to build bridges with the Phoenix community in the early 1980’s and served as a local councillor for his area in the 1990’s. Today Lenford still very intensely involved with local community groups taking up civic and welfare matters in his community.

 

Sulosh Pillay

 

Sulosh Pillay is a volunteer and community activist that has worked to uplift the lives of communities and to assist CBO’s from across the KZN region ,as the leader of the SAB  CSI team, she was responsible for hundreds of community projects.Sulosh also served as the Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Help line in Phoenix and contributed immensely to various programmes of the Phoenix Working Committee, Phoenix Child welfare and various other NGO’s and CBO’s

 

Tobias Mkhize

 

Tobias Mkhize has worked for many years for the eThekwini Municipality as a co ordinator of the Traditional healers programme. Tobias is now retired and has volunteered his services to several NGO’s. Tobias serves as a board member of the PCC as well as the Anglican Church in Kwa Mashu. Tobias has travelled to India and is keen to study and train other volunteers in the area of alternate medicine.

 

 

Lillian

 

Lillian is a community activist and has been involved in early childhood education for many years. Lilian lives and works in the Bambayi community and also runs a community crèche in the area. Over the years, Lillian has become involved in poverty alleviation and HIV/Aids programmes.

H.M COOVADIA ( PROF)

 

Professor Jerry Coovadia is renowed paediatrician and has received the Nelson R. Mandela award for his work on HIV/AIDS. As a key leader of the NIC and UDF he played a crucial role in the freedom struggle of our country. Jerry Coovadia is also an active player in the field of health care and research in HIV/AIDS for which he has received many international accolades.

 

 

 

E . GANDHI (MS)

 

Ms. Ela Gandhi is the well know grand daughter of the great Mahatma Gandhi and has contributed to community development in the greater Durban region. She was also involved very closely with the struggle for freedom in South Africa. She served as a member of parliament for ruling ANC. Currently she heads the Gandhi Development Trust and is Chancellor of DUT.
