Mr. Sham Maharaj

Sham Maharaj is a community activist who joined and worked with progressive civil society organisations since the late 1970’s. Sham held leadership positions in various civic, welfare, health and education institutions and served on the executive of the Durban Metropolitan Council in 1990’s. In 2023 Sham Maharaj was awarded a citation by the South African Human Rights Commission for his work around Social Cohesion post the July 2021 unrest.
Professor CC Jinabhai
Chairperson
Professor Jinabhai is a medical doctor and former lecturer (now retired) of Community Medicine in the Nelson R Mandela Teaching Hospital in Durban. Prof. Jinabhai is also a community activist who joined and worked with various community based progressive organisations from the 1970’s. In the Phoenix area Prof. Jinabhai worked with the Phoenix Working Committee, Phoenix Child Welfare, and the Phoenix Community Centre.
Ms. Pat Ntuli
Treasurer
Pat is a community worker that lives in Phoenix and is part of religious and senior citizen organisations. Pat joined the Phoenix Community Centre over ten years ago and currently holds the position of Treasurer at the PCC.
Dr. Muni Kooblal
Board Member
Dr. Muni Kooblal is an academic, a former educator and now lecturer who is active in various civil society organisations since 1977. Muni served in leadership roles in various organisation’s and is currently serving on the executive of Phoenix Child Welfare, Phoenix Working Committee, Phoenix Ubuntu Forum, Phoenix Community Centre and Child welfare SA-KZN.
